If you are a Microsoft Dynamics CRM customer, it is time to switch to Dynamics 365. Dynamics 365 is the present and future of Microsoft’s business applications that combines CRM and ERP functionalities.
In this article, we look at the capabilities of Dynamics CRM and Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement, and compare the two.
Microsoft released Dynamics 365 in November 2016 with many advanced features. This blog you will give you an idea about how different the two products are and the new functionalities introduced in Dynamics 365.
Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement is the latest version of Dynamics CRM, the previous version is Dynamics CRM 2016 which is still in action. The purpose and design of both are the same, both are designed for the cloud, and can be installed on-premise.
Then the questions are, why does the product is fully rebranded to Dynamics 365? We need to look at this in the context of Microsoft bringing together its business applications (CRM as well as AX and NAV, its ERP offerings) to form a unique platform covering CRM and ERP under the hood of Dynamics 365. It is a new experience of CRM and ERP apps in the same window.
Microsoft intends to wipe out the traditional silos of internal information (ERP) and external information (CRM) applications. Instead of that, they are focusing more on delivering the tools that organizations need to conduct their business in a modern era. In practical terms, Dynamics 365 offers more opportunities to leverage information in other cloud services such as Office 365 or Azure. Dynamics 365 offers both Customer Relationship Management (CRM ) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) packages in a single subscription which makes licensing also easier to manage.
Microsoft Dynamics 2016
Dynamics CRM 2016 is the predecessor of Dynamics 365 for Customer Engagement which provides sales, customer service, and marketing modules. The versions previous to Dynamics 2016 are Dynamics CRM 2015, 2013, 2011, CRM 4.0, 3.0, etc, of which versions from CRM 2011 to 2015 considered the modern CRM versions.
And Dynamics CRM is capable of managing an organization’s complete CRM needs and can be integrated with 100s of third-party and Microsoft applications for accounting, CMS, procurement, and marketing automation needs.
New features of Dynamics 365
Microsoft has a bigger plan for transforming Dynamics CRM into a different suite where it combines other applications such as Dynamics 365 FO, Talent, Retail along with Microsoft Power platform – PowerApps, Microsoft Flow, PowerBI, CDS.
There are many attractive features in Dynamics 365 exist such as the app-based licensing, the new UI with individual sitemaps for apps, the editable grid, tight integration of CRM and ERP functionality together etc. In sales, marketing and customer service modules are transformed into Dynamics 365 for Sales, Dynamics 365 for Customer Service apps along with Dynamics 365 for Field Service and Dynamics 365 for Project Service Automation(PSA).
In keeping with the Dynamics 365 concept of “the right functionality in the right place”, grouping together different functional areas of Dynamics 365 into “applications” and display these to particular users.

Dynamics 365 provides the ability to present lists of records as editable grids – which allows the user to make inline changes in the records without having to load the whole record. Editable grids help to manage customer needs to approve quotes before they can be sent out. It helps to view the list of quotes awaiting the approval and mark each as approved there, rather than having to open each individual record, locate the approval box, check it, close the record and open the next.
B. Global Search
The global search functionality is an attractive functionality of Dynamics 365 CRM. This specifying which record types and fields we needed to find and Dynamics 365 has built upon this by adding Relevance Search, a full “Google-style” search function that matches any word in the search term with any field in an item, before returning results in a single list sorted by an item. This is a particularly useful piece of functionality with the coming of GDPR: for example, if an individual contacts us to request that we summarise information we hold on them, we could simply be able to search the system for their name using relevance search, rather than having to manually search all records that could possibly hold relevant information.
C. Relationship Insights (Preview Features)
This suite of features, in public preview at the time of writing, is designed to give users circumstantial insights into their interaction with your customers. One form this takes an action card, automatically generated prompts. For example, remind your users of deals that are due to be closed, or using Azure Machine Learning to automatically identify potential sales opportunities from emails in Outlook. Similarly, the Auto-Capture functionality can surface untracked emails from Outlook to users, saving effort and energy on manually checking that all appropriate email threads are tracked in Dynamics 365.
