Recently completed Power bi implementation for a client successfully and following are the top 7 factors that lead to a successful Power Bi report implementation ( as per our team’s experience).

Microsoft Power Bi is a powerful but relatively easier tools for developing business intelligence ( BI), but for a successful implementation of Power Bi project we need to be bit more careful and should have proper planning in place.

  1. Proper requirement analysis and design: This is cliché but still important. We have to spend a good amount of time on requirement analysis, still there would be some minor design changes comes up after we initiate report development.
  2. Customer reviews at different stages: It is not just during requirement analysis phase, but your team need to include customer reps ( or business users ) during requirement analysis, design, testing and UAT phases as well.
  3. Customer Sign off on design: This is very important if you want to stay within your budget. There are situations where customers might ask for design changes, that would change everything and shoot up your implementation cost.
  4. Ensure data correctness: While testing the reports for accuracy you would realize data mismatches and lack of master data. This will make it tough for you to prove your reports are accurate.
  5. Consider Testing time: If you haven’t prepared test cases for reports in the beginning, you would ended up spending lot of time on testing and eat up your budget.
  6. Ensure management Involvement: There would be situations where business users hesitate to test Power Bi reports in time or use the reports at all. In such situations make sure you have to reach out to the management to make everyone is serious about their Power bi implementation.
  7. Evaluate Hourly rate vs Fixed-bid billing: While most of the clients prefer fixed-bid billing, there are customers who are comfortable with hourly rate billing too ( once you convince the benefits). If the client is not very ‘IT savy’ they may take lot of time to finish reviews, testing and approvals that would delay your project and you would ended up in loss.

Hope this helps someone implementing Power Bi reports for their clients. Fee free to comment your thoughts, ideas and questtions.

Cheers,

Firoz

The recent October release for Dynamics 365 entailed a multitude of new features benefitting a variety of applications within the popular Microsoft Dynamics Finance and Operations (FNO) product suite.
This is an improvement on the functionality available in its predecessor- Microsoft Dynamics AX.

This recent release solidifies Microsoft’s dedication to ensuring the Finance & Operations system is the frontrunner out of other available contenders within the ERP space, and this was confirmed with this update.

Below is a list of the 7 top additions to the product suite based off the recent release

1.Positive pay:

Due to the prevalent issue of ‘cheque fraud’ banks face when dealing with their customers, Microsoft have implemented Positive Pay (also known as “SafePay”), in Dynamics 365 FNO, which is essentially a 4-eye verification process of sensitive data.

When an organization prints cheques to send to its prospective bank, an electronic list of the cheques is automatically sent to the bank prior to them receiving the individual cheaque themselves. This provides the bank the ability to do a sense check of the information on the list and what’s on the cheques themselves, and if the data doesn’t match up, they can hold that cheque for further review.

2. Product Catalogues:

Another useful feature in this release of Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations allows purchasing teams to import information directly from vendor catalogues. This enabling employees to request information (such as items & services) internally from the procurement catalogue.

3. Global Address Book:

The Global Address Book is incredibly valuable as it consolidates the information regarding the parties’ organizations do business with into one central resource. The added functionality of assigning a ‘party role’ enables the segregation of parties/individuals based on relevance, such as  customer, vendor, competitor and contact. On top of this, in the new release of Dynamics 365 FNO entities can be linked to several ‘roles.’ For example, a customer can also be a vendor

4. Mobile Project Timesheets:

One of the key features to come out of this release is the ability for mobile devices to host and manage timesheets.

This provides added flexibility for employees to manage their timesheets on the move and allows for line managers to approve the submitted timesheets on a mobile device or computer, as well as being able to add comments to provide better communication of project details.

This new functionality also allows users to copy information from historic sheets, significantly reducing both the time taken to complete the timesheets and the chances of manual errors.

5. Request for Quotation (RFQ’s):

Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations now enables companies to submit RFQ’s more efficiently by providing the ability to send RFQ’s to multiple vendors, accept & register bids and subsequent replies, as well as transfer accepted bids onto relevant documentation such as PO’s (purchase orders).

6. Transportation Management:

Logistical efficiency is imperative to any organisation and the Transportation Management feature significantly improves the identification of optimal inbound and outbound vendor and routing solutions when submitting orders, enhancing cost effectiveness and speed.

Transportation Management enables organisations to efficiently identify transportation charges and adjust sales prices in advance, which ultimately frees up budget and saves on bottom line costs.

7. Trade Allowance Management:

The final noteworthy feature provides process efficiencies within the sales process- Trade Allowance Management allows companies to manage promo programs and offer a reward scheme to customers that meet certain criteria. Assigning sales milestones and targets to measure customers performance, coupled with assigning monetary rewards eradicates the need to run reports or manually track the status of clients performance.

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations recent release has provided a variety of benefits to critical areas within SMEs daily operations, enabling them to focus on alternative areas of their business with the power of knowing their processes are both efficient and cost effective. Which has only added to the existing reputation Microsoft have established in the Dynamics ERP & CRM marketplace.

What is a Solution?

A solution is a mechanism to transport your customization from one Dynamics 365 CE environment to the other. Once you done the customization using UI and code you need to transport to target system and solution help you in that situation.

When a solution is used?

Solutions are used when you want to migrate your customization from one Dynamics 365 CE enviroment to the other. For example, from the customization you have done on the development server to the product server.

What are the types of Solutions

There are mainly 3 types of solutions in Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement:

1. Default Solution

2. Managed Solution

3. Un-managed Solution

What is the difference between managed and un-managed solution?

Managed Solution – The content in managed solution cannot edited, they are like an .exe file which we cannot edit. We can just install and uninstall the manged solution when needed. When you install, you can make use of the functionality included in the solution. Managed solutions are used in productions.

Un-managed Solution – The content in an un-managed solution is editable by another developer or admin if needed, These type of solutions are used in situation when you want to deploy your changes to a development or testing environment and not production. Or to hand over your work when you are going on a vacation.

What is a Solution publisher?

When you create a solution, managed or un-managed, you need to select a publisher record to it. The solution publisher indicates who published the solution or who done the customization included in that particular solution.

When a new solution is required

How to create a solution?

The following video explains the basics of solution, managed Vs un-managed solution. Also walk you through how to create solutions from scratch, add components to a solution and perform import/export operations.

In this article we will have a look at the differences between Microsoft’s ERP application for enterprises – Dynamics AX ( now it is called Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations) and Customer Engagement (previously Dynamics CRM).

Dynamics 365 is a combination of Microsoft’s ERP and Customer Engagement (CRM) applications. Businesses use Dynamics 365 to manage their customer interaction as well as to keep track of their operations.

In short, Dynamics 365 is more than just CRM) and ERP, it is the combination of Customer Engagement and ERP apps where businesses can purchase individual or multiple apps together.

Earlier we had Microsoft Dynamics stack which is nothing but a group of 6 enterprise applications – 6 enterprise business applications.

Apps in Microsoft Dynamics Stack/Suite are listed below:

  • Dynamics Customer Engagement(CRM)
  • Dynamics AX (Axapta)
  • Dynamics NAV ( Navision)
  • Dynamics GP ( Great Plains)
  • Dynamics SL ( Solomen)
  • Dynamics C5

Out of these, only the first one CRM applications and rest are ERP applications from Microsoft for different domains and market segments.

WatchIntro to Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement(CRM)

Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations

Finance and Operations (FNO) is the upgraded version of Microsoft’s Dynamics AX which is the ERP suite for enterprise businesses to mange their operations.

Dynamics 365 FNO has the following apps:

Finance

Supply Chain Management (SCM)

Talent (HR)

Retail

Differences between Dynamics AX and Dynamics CRM

Lets have the major differences between Dynamics AX/ FNO and dynamics CRM.

Primarily the first one is ERP application while the second one is a CRM.

Dynamics CRM is used to manage customer interactions and retain customers while Dynamics AX is used to manage end to end operations of an orgnization.

Dynamics CRM has apps like sales, customer service, field service, marketing while Dynamics AX has apps Finance, Production, manufacturing, supply chain, talent.

All modules of Dynamics CRM are available on Dynamics 365 and on cloud while not all apps in Dynamics AX are yet on Dynamics 365.

Dynamics CRM is the only CRM application of Microsoft while they have multiple applications like Business central central, Great plain, Solomon etc

On-Premise And Online versions of Dynamics AX

Dynamics AX aka Dynamics 365 FNO has both on-premise and cloud versions available. Depends on a business’ needs they can go for either of these versions.

On-premise Dynamics Ax is more suitable if you have a server infrastructure available to manage your server and applications. At the same time cloud version is suitable for small businesses who don’t want to invest in the in the infrastructure and maintenance.

Similar to Dynamics FNO, Dynamics CRM and business central applications also have both on-premise and online( cloud) versions are available.

In November 2016 Microsoft has come up with the ‘re-packaging’ of existing Dynamics solutions. They had taken all the modules from Dynamics CRM such as Sales, Customer Service, Marketing and few modules from Dynamics AX such Finance, talent and retail and initiated as Dynamics 365.

In continuation of advanced plugin concepts part 1, in this post, we’ll discuss shared variables in ms crm plugins and how to use them. We’ll also discuss user impersonation in plugins and how we can use it.

1. Shared Variables

Microsoft Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement platform and the execution pipeline provides the ability to pass data from one plug-in to another through an IPluginExecutionContext property called SharedVariables. This property is a collection of key/value pairs which developers can use to share data between plug-ins which are registered on both the pre and post events.

Shared Variables are useful for sharing the data during complex Plug-in development by sharing the data between Plugins registered on both the pre and post events.

Any value stored in the Plug-in context of Pre-event will be available in the Post-event of the Plug-in. This way, we can avoid storing the values in a custom attribute. Certain data validation which needs to be done at post-event can be achieved by passing the value from Pre-event of the Plug-in

Test Case: For a demo, let’s say We want to check the if the contact being created is duplicate i.e. contact exists with same first name and last name in Customer Engagement. If it exists, on post-operation, we want to mark the contact status duplicate.

Below is a sample code where we are passing a flag if we found this contact duplicate from a pre-event plugin and retrieving the shared variables from the post-event plugin and change status:

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Threading.Tasks;
using Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk;
using Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.Query;
using Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.Client;
using Microsoft.Crm.Sdk.Messages;

namespace TestPlugin
{
 public class PreEventPlugin : IPlugin
 {
  public void Execute(IServiceProvider serviceProvider)
  {
  // Obtain the execution context from the service provider.
  Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext context = (Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext)
  serviceProvider.GetService(typeof(Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext));
  IOrganizationService service = ((IOrganizationServiceFactory)serviceProvider.GetService(typeof(IOrganizationServiceFactory))).CreateOrganizationService(new Guid?(context.UserId));
  if ((context.InputParameters.Contains("Target")) && (context.InputParameters["Target"] is Entity) && context.MessageName.ToUpper() == "UPDATE")
  {
   Entity entity = (Entity)context.InputParameters["Target"];
   String sFirstName = entity.GetAttributeValue<String>("firstname");
   String sLastName = entity.GetAttributeValue<String>("lastname");

   QueryExpression qe = new QueryExpression("contact");
   qe.Criteria.AddCondition("firstname", ConditionOperator.Equal, sFirstName);
   qe.Criteria.AddCondition("lastname", ConditionOperator.Equal, sLastName);
   EntityCollection enColl = service.RetrieveMultiple(qe);
   if (enColl.Entities.Count >= 1)
   {
    // variable named isDuplicate
    context.SharedVariables.Add("isDuplicate", true);
    }
   }
   }
  }

 public class PostEventPlugin : IPlugin
  {
  public void Execute(IServiceProvider serviceProvider)
  {
  // Obtain the execution context from the service provider.
  Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext context = (Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext)
  serviceProvider.GetService(typeof(Microsoft.Xrm.Sdk.IPluginExecutionContext));
  IOrganizationService service = ((IOrganizationServiceFactory)serviceProvider.GetService(typeof(IOrganizationServiceFactory))).CreateOrganizationService(new Guid?(context.UserId));

  if ((context.InputParameters.Contains("Target")) && (context.InputParameters["Target"] is Entity) && context.MessageName.ToUpper() == "UPDATE")
  {
   Entity entity = (Entity)context.InputParameters["Target"];
   // Obtain the contact from the execution context shared variables.
   Boolean isDuplicate = (Boolean)context.SharedVariables["isDuplicate"];
   if (isDuplicate)
   {
    //update status to duplicate
    Entity en = new Entity("contact");
    en.Id = entity.Id;
    en["statuscode"] = new OptionSetValue(100000000);//Duplicate (custom value)
    service.Update(en);
    }
   }
  }
 }
}

Limitation

For a plug-in registered in stage 20 or 40 of plugin execution pipeline, to access the shared variables from a stage 10 registered plug-in that executes on create, update, delete or by a RetrieveExchangeRateRequest, you must access the ParentContext.SharedVariables collection. For all other cases, IPluginExecutionContext.SharedVariables contains the collection.

What this means is that if the Shared Variable is being set during Pre-Validation, you need to look at the Parent Context to find it when retrieving it in a Pre-Operation or Post-Operation step. It may not be in the immediate Parent Context either; you may need to check each parent’s parent to find where the Shared Variable has been stored.

Lastly, you cannot share variables between steps using different messages and/or entities, even if one triggers the other. For instance, let’s say that we have a plugin that executes when an Account is updated and that this plugin updates associated Contacts. Let’s also say that we have another plugin that gets triggered when the Contact is updated, so we have a case where the Account update plugin triggers this Contact update plugin. You’d see that the IExecutionContext.Depth for the Contact plugin is set to 2, but the Shared Variables you set in the Account plugin will not be available to the Contact plugin.

Watch : Using Shared variables in Plugins.
